Our weekend getaway to Kaunas couldn’t be complete without lazy breakfast, aromatic coffee and traditional Lithuanian cuisine. The city turned out to be a wonderful place to try it all, with a variety of establishments. Here are our suggestions of places to eat in Kaunas!
💡 The headings with the names of the places are a link leading to the exact location.
Baking Mad Hidden Lab
I was surprised that many of the places to eat were open until 10pm and with our late arrival, there was a good chance we would miss dinner… And we were starving! For this reason, and for the great reviews and huge burgers, we chose Baking Mad Hidden Lab. The concept is based on the popular TV series Breaking Bad, with some cool interior details. The menu offers interesting burger combinations, with each burger also coming with a side of fries. We chose OFF SEASON and HEISENBERG – both were great! There is also a variety of Lithuanian draft beers, the dark Vilkmerges was very good.
Bernelių užeiga
By far the most popular restaurant for traditional cuisine is Bernelių užeiga. It has two objects – in the old and the new town. We visited the one in the new one (Bernelių užeiga Smuklė) by making a reservation by phone in advance. The interior is like a small ethnographic museum, the waiters wear Lithuanian garbs, and the menu is full of national dishes representing Lithuanian cuisine. The most popular are potato pancakes, fried dumplings and beetroot soup. Whatever you choose, you will get a taste of the local cuisine! However, I recommend you the legendary Kaunas Old Town veal, hidden under a fluffy cheese hat…
Holy Donut
Fooled by the name of this shop chain, I hesitated for a long time whether to include it in our brunch plan… But they are definitely not “just a donut shop”! They have three locations in the city, and the most frequented one is the one on the main street. The atmosphere is very pleasant, the staff extremely friendly and the breakfast offerings can satisfy all your preferences! Although almost the entire restaurant was booked, we were still seated at a table with a later reservation time. Their coffee is great and the food comes very quickly and was really good. The only thing we didn’t like were their “holy” donuts, which seemed a little dry to us…
Habits
This was my favorite when planning Kaunas and it definitely didn’t disappoint. Habits bakery is an ideal choice for brunch, an aromatic cappuccino or a freshly baked croissant! Note that it’s becoming an increasingly popular location and it may be difficult to find a free space in the morning… The atmosphere is great and so is the coffee and food. The variety of baked goods is huge! The breakfast options were a little slow to come, but that’s normal given the busyness…
Kasdienybės Bakehouse
Another cozy place with perfect coffee is Kasdienybės Bakehouse! Although it’s only been around since 2023, this place won us over with its lovely atmosphere and great baked goods. Their croissants are divine! They have different seasonal offers and interesting drinks. Everyone is very nice, and their coffee is really the best we tried in Kaunas.
Ji Lounge Kaunas and rePUBlic No.1
Kaunas has a lot of young people and correspondingly good nightlife options. Bars are plentiful and you may find the perfect one for you, depending on your needs. The first night we stayed late after dinner at the crowded pub rePUBlic No.1, listening to pleasant music and contemplating everything happening on the main street. On the second day, we indulged in the relaxing atmosphere of Ji Lounge Kaunas and their excellent hookahs. It’s located in a quiet place, nestled next to a former fortress wall.
