The culinary face of Limnos is so rich and authentic that this is not a place where food is tailored for mass tourism at all… Ever since antiquity, it has been known as the “granary of the Aegean Sea” because of its fertile soils and excellent wheat. That is why perhaps the most popular product here is the “Flomaria” pasta, prepared entirely from local products (flour, eggs, and sheep’s milk), which pairs ideally both with seafood and slow-cooked meat.
Do not miss out on trying the local cheeses – the white cheese Kalathaki Limnou, the semi-hard Melichloro, or the local feta. All of this goes hand in hand with a glass of chilled wine – the island is famous for its aromatic Muscat of Alexandria and the ancient red variety Limnio, mentioned even in the texts of Homer! You can easily find almost everything on the restaurant menus, and if you want to take some home, here are a few shops where you can do so:
➡️ ΑΡΤΟΠΟΙΊΑ “Η ΛΗΜΝΟΣ” – ΟΙΚΟΓΕΝΕΙΑ ΠΟΡΙΑΖΗ – the best place to get pasta to take home! You can also find rusks, jams, cheeses, and other local products.
➡️ ΠΑΝΤΟΠΩΛΕΙΟΝ “ΧΥΜΑ & ΤΣΟΥΒАΛΑΤΑ” – a large shop with a huge assortment of goods! Here you can find everything traditional for Limnos and at relatively good prices. They also have an online store.
➡️ Παντοπωλείο “Η Λήμνος μας” – a small shop at the beginning of the commercial street, packed with products from local producers – wines, pasta, honey, jams, tsipouro, and what not.
➡️ Χρυσάφη – a traditional bakery, and I am giving the location of perhaps their largest facility, but they are all over the island. In several places, we bought their pies with various fillings, and we tried one with minced meat that was fantastic. Their foil-wrapped sweets (Kerasmata) were the best we bought from Limnos!
Places visited on Limnos
Right after this brief overview of the island’s main flavors, we move on to our culinary route – featuring the places we visited and our personal impressions of which ones were truly worth it (and which ones – not so much):
💡The headings with the names of the places are a link leading to the exact location.
Tavern GLAROS
The tavern is located right on the corner of the old fishing port of Myrina and offers a magnificent view of the swaying boats and the castle illuminated at night. The service was impeccable – we had made a reservation in advance and they seated us at the best possible table!
On their menu, we found the traditional flomaria pasta with shrimp, which was fantastic, and the octopus was so tender it literally melted in your mouth. The prices are completely reasonable considering the quality and top location, and the atmosphere here gave a great start to our stay on Limnos!
Tavern Kosmos
Another place with a perfect location in Myrina and a romantic view of the sunset, the fortress, and the small white church at its foot. Again, we had a reservation in advance and they had prepared a great table for us near the water. The local feta, the taramasalata, and the thin fried zucchini were wonderful! Their pasta failed to surpass the one at GLAROS, but it was still pretty good.
The place is constantly full and a bit more lively – the tables are placed close to each other and the waiters are constantly bustling around with full trays, but the prices are completely normal. It is worth entering the main building of the tavern and going up to the second floor, where a magical view of the entire promenade opens up…
Glykanisos
Maybe I had higher expectations for this place, but I was left a little disappointed… The service was lacking, the prices of some dishes seemed slightly inflated to us, and the food by traditional Greek standards was rather average. The sardines and the fava were good, but the grilled squid felt a bit like rubber. However, the atmosphere is pleasant, as is the view of the quiet bay of Nea Koutali. But if you are not in the area, it is definitely not worth traveling specifically for this restaurant!
Το Φαγουριό της Μύρινας
This is the perfect place in Myrina if you are looking for something quick, unpretentious, and really delicious! It is located right next to the old port, and the tables are scattered under a huge palm tree. Our order arrived lightning fast, and the gyros and souvlaki portions were generous, juicy, and fantastically prepared. Unfortunately, there was no draft beer, which disappointed me a bit, but on the other hand, they offer several types of local craft beers. If you want to look at the bay from another perspective, the terrace on the second floor is a great option!
Ouzo Menelaos
This was the only absolutely mandatory restaurant that I was firmly determined for us to visit – and believe me, we were not mistaken! It is located in a secluded, quiet bay and is a small fisherman’s house with wooden tables outside and glowing fairy lights intertwined in the branches of the trees. A true village idyll!
Everything we ordered was flawless – crispy fried calamari, grilled sardines, juicy mussels, and irresistible zucchini fritters. The atmosphere, the taste of the food… everything takes you back in time, as if you are in 1960s Greece! The tables were served by only one young man who didn’t stop running for a second… Even though he was insanely busy, he didn’t take the smile off his face the entire time. Excellent food quality, good prices, and an attitude that leaves an impression!
